If your Kansas City deck is looking filthy and tired, restore it to its former glory by giving it a refreshing spa treatment.

Pressure washing your outdoor living space is the best way to remove the ground-in dirt and grime that nature, humans, and pets have left behind. When this treatment is performed annually, you won’t have to work so hard keeping your Kansas City deck looking as gorgeous as the day it was built.

However, the pressure wash needs to be done correctly to avoid damaging the decking boards. In case you aren’t aware, these powerful tools are capable of etching brick, so be extra careful!

The Proper Way to Achieve a Perfectly Pressure Washed Deck

Step 1: Obtain a Pressure Washer

Buying a pressure washer is an investment, but it’s worth purchasing one because it can be used to clean your home’s siding and driveway in addition to your deck. However, if you don’t want to shell out the money to buy a pressure washer, you can rent one from a home improvement store for between $40 and $100.

Once you have the pressure washer in hand, you need to choose the appropriate pressure setting and spray tip.

If your deck is made of softwood-like cedar, use a pressure range between 500 and 600 psi. For decks that are made of hardwood and pressure-treated wood, going with a pressure of 1200 psi should do the trick, but don’t go any higher than 1500 psi.

You’ll need to attach a wide nozzle of 15 or 18 degrees, which is usually green or yellow.

Step 2: Prep Your Outdoor Living Space

Before you begin pressure washing the deck, you want to cover all electrical components and light fixtures. You should also cover any plants that are close to the deck because the pressurized water could damage them.

Check all the windows overlooking the deck to make sure they’re tightly closed. Do the same with the doors leading to your outdoor living space.

Next, relocate furniture, planters, and anything else situated on your deck. As you’re doing this, take note of the direction of the wind because it will carry the spray.

Lastly, make sure pets and children are safely inside.

Step 3: Familiarize Yourself with the Pressure Washer

Check out the pressure washer’s instruction booklet and start familiarizing yourself with the cool tool that’s going to make your Kansas City deck sparkle.

After you’ve finished reading the instructions, it’s time to run a pressure test.

Choose an inconspicuous area of your Kansas City deck, then practice using the pressure washer on low pressure. Be sure to wear goggles and keep the nozzle at least a foot above the deck’s surface.

Step 4: Start Spraying and Keep It Steady

With goggles on and a pressure washer in hand, begin spraying your deck at the end opposite steps or another external exit point.

As mentioned earlier, keep the nozzle at least twelve inches from the deck’s surface. Control the spray using slow even strokes that follow the wood grain. Don’t spray with back and forth or zigzag motions because you’ll score the wood.

Once you’ve sprayed your entire Kansas City deck, go back over the area to avoid leaving patchy spots. Pay special attention to the corners of the deck to make sure water isn’t pooling in these locations.

Now that you’ve finished pressure washing your outdoor living space, you’ll need to help the wood dry as quickly as possible and rid it of any standing water. This can be accomplished with a mop, towels, rubber or plastic squeegee, or a leaf blower.

Step 5: Wait Before Staining

Let your freshly cleaned Kansas City deck dry out before applying a protective stain or sealant. It should dry completely within two to three days. Hopefully, no rain is in the forecast!
